CYCLE OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Many people who are being abused do not see themselves as victims. Also, abusers do not see themselves as being abusive. People often think of Family Violence as physical violence, such as hitting, However Domestic Violence takes other forms, such
as spiritual, psychological, emotional,
or sexual abuse.
Stage 1: TENSION BUILDING
1. Abuser starts to get angry.
2. Abuse may begin.
3. There is a breakdown of communcation.
4. Victims feel the need to keep the abuser calm.
5. Tension becomes too much.
6. Victims feel like they are walking on egg shells.
Stage 2: EXPLOSION! The Abuse Occurs:
1. Name calling or
putdown.
2. Pushing, hitting, slapping, kicking,
choking, spiting,
biting
3. Threats
4. Injuries
5. Murder
Stage 3: Honeymoon
1. Abuser may apologize for abuse.
2. Abuser may promise it will never happen again.
3. Abuser may blame the victim for causing the abuse.
4. Abuser may deny abuse took place or say it was not
as bad as the victim claims.
5. Abuser may give gifts to victim.
6. Victims may hope that the abuse is over.
I GOT FLOWERS TODAY
